The Commons Needs YOU!
We are excited to announce that—thanks to the nearly 250 donations from our cherished community—recent pledges have brought our promised total to enough to pay off our building note!
We are so close to meeting our original campaign goal, which also includes fundraising for our kitchen remodel. As often happens with such endeavors, both the construction costs and the required length of the cafe’s closure have increased since the remodel began. With the ownership of our building now within grasp, we are seeking to raise an additional $50,000 from our current amount toward this end. We have a matching offer of $10,000 that would be a great start to covering these expenses!
Every gift, big or small, counts! We are able to receive donations via cash, check, credit card, corporate gift matches, and even stocks! You can make a donation in one of the following ways:
Online at swcommonscafe.org/donate
By mail at PO Box 222, Langley, WA 98260
By contacting Board President Wendy Cordova at swcommonsmgmt@gmail.com or (425) 444-3391
Thank you so much for your continued support and for all of your generous donations to Preserve the Heart of Langley and Save The Commons! We truly could not do this without you all, and we are so excited for what lies ahead once our brand new kitchen is complete!

Our Mission
The South Whidbey Commons strengthens our community by providing an intentional space for coffee and conversations where people of all ages may gather, learn, and grow.
A nonprofit organization, The Commons provides workplace training to middle and high school students, and serves as a venue for all kinds of multigenerational events and activities.
Beverage and food sales, book sales, donations, and grants fund our programs, allowing South Whidbey Commons Cafe & Books to provide a safe and nurturing environment where all can feel at home.
Fundraising Aims
We currently aim to raise $375,000 by January 31, 2025 to pay back the bridge loan graciously provided by Whidbey Community Foundation to assist our recovery from COVID, and to bring our kitchen up to current health department regulations so that we can both maintain the ownership of our home in Langley and best serve our beloved community and patrons.
We invite you to donate to our fundraising campaign below.
Thank you for spreading the word, and don’t forget to ask your employer about corporate gift matching to maximize your contribution!

FAQs
-
We received a bridge loan from Whidbey Community Foundation (WCF) as a recipient of their Impact Fund which included $300,000 to pay off a lien on our building and $25,000 to assist with the cost of day-to-day operations. The repayment due date for this loan is February 1st, 2025, and the interest accrued on the loan brings the total to approximately $350,000. The additional $25,000 is required to bring our kitchen up to code in accordance with new health department regulations. We have already invested $15,000 to date toward design, permits, and appliances (two refrigerators, one freezer, an ice machine, an oven, and an oven stand), and we have $45,000 worth of work remaining. We received a $20,000 federal loan toward this end through Island County, leaving $25,000 to raise.
-
The exact outcomes are unclear, but on time payment will ensure we maintain ownership of our building, a vital aspect of our involvement in the community.
-
We are looking into grants and seeking large dollar amount donations while simultaneously encouraging our patrons to contribute to our fundraising campaign online or in person. Additionally, we are seeking volunteers to join outreach and fundraising committees to help provide the support needed to enact a number of action items suggested by our community to help raise both awareness and funds.

Many thanks from the South Whidbey Commons board for your continued care, consideration, and support!
